Develop the Garment, Not Just the Look

From a Brief to a Buildable Specification.

A product idea becomes manufacturable when its dimensions, construction and material directions can be explained and checked. We first identify the decisions already fixed by the brand and those that remain open. This avoids treating attractive reference images as complete manufacturing instructions.

Review the Inputs That Matter

What a Useful Development Brief Identifies

If something is unknown, label it as an open decision rather than guessing. An early review can focus discussion on the missing information that affects sampling.

  • Garment category
  • Intended activity
  • Target wearer
  • Fit references
  • Size range
  • Estimated quantity
  • Desired brand appearance
  • Open decisions, clearly labelled

Fit and Pattern Decisions

The Measurements Matter More Than the Fit Label.

Relaxed fit, athletic fit and oversized fit represent different relationships among garment measurements, body movement and the intended silhouette. A pattern review should consider balance, ease and where the garment needs room to move. The label used to describe the fit is less important than the measurements and approved result.

Athletic FitCloser to the body; ease placed where movement needs it.

Relaxed FitMore ease through body and sleeve; balance still matters.

Oversized FitA deliberate silhouette—not every measurement enlarged.
Develop the Details as a System

Change One Detail, and Others Move With It.

Technical decisions should be reviewed as connected constraints before the sample is finalized.

Translate the Design Into Measurable Details

A Drawing Shows the Idea. Measurements Show What to Check.

Before sample review, brands benefit from a clear size chart and the key points of measure. Version labels make it easier to compare proposed changes.

ItemWhat It Communicates
Size ChartGarment dimensions across the size range
Key Points of MeasureExactly where each dimension is taken
TolerancesWhere agreed, the acceptable variation
Seam PlacementWhere seams sit on the body
Trim PositionsWhere zippers, drawcords and labels go
Version LabelWhich proposal a comment refers to

Sample Review

Observe, Decide, Record.

Sample reviews should separate observations from decisions. A note such as “waistband feels loose during movement” is more useful when accompanied by measurements, images and the requested adjustment.

Development File

What a Production-Ready Development File Contains.

The precise document set depends on the project and should be agreed before bulk manufacturing.

  • Approved measurements
  • Annotated technical drawings
  • Approved material and trim decisions

Common Questions

Not covered here? Send your project and ask us directly.

A reference sample can guide evaluation, but its dimensions, materials and construction need to be documented and confirmed for your project.

Revision scope and any related charges should be agreed for the specific project before development proceeds.
